I have been in the interior design industry for 25 years.
It is really hard to believe that it has been that long! The industry has evolved so much in that time. There are many things about the industry today that didn’t exist when I first started in the year 2000.
One of the most significant shifts I’ve observed in the design industry is the erosion of protected to-the-trade sources.
The accessibility of these resources to clients at equal or lower prices online has had a detrimental impact on interior designers. Unfortunately, this trend seems irreversible and continues to worsen.
It blows my mind that the same vendors who admit that interior designers make up 60% of their yearly sales would undercut them by selling to major websites for big discounts that they don’t offer to designers.
Thankfully, I created a second business in 2016 to combat this issue called The Designers Collaborative. I knew we were stronger together and the competitive ways of the past were not going to serve us in the future.
Interior Designers are much more open and collaborative with each other these days. This shift has been hugely beneficial.
The Designers Collaborative has over 500 members and offers over 300 vendors at the best price tiers offered by the vendors so designers can match the internet price and still make a profit. It is a total game-changer!
Plus, we offer tools, templates, and a thriving community that supports all of our members to run their business with confidence.
2025 has brought many beneficial developments for interior designers, including new software and tools that improve business operations and organization.
These tools also enhance client experience by providing realistic models, effectively visualizing their visions. The future promises even more exciting possibilities for the industry.
In my 25 years as an interior designer, I’ve seen significant transformations. As the future brings further change, I’m committed to adapting and embracing it.
